Nick Fewings Ngagementworks

To help others who wish to be part of Pay It Forward, I thought I’d best practice what I preach and provide the first post, so that others can understand the format.  I hope that you enjoy it and the learning helps you and your team.  I’ve written it as others will appear.

In this post, our PIFPAL (Pay It Forward Pal) is Nick Fewings, who was born in Plymouth, UK and currently lives in Bournemouth. Nick is CEO (Creative Engagement Operative) of Ngagementworks. You can find out more via his LinkedIn Profile.

Nick’s passion in work is helping individuals and teams achieve even greater success through facilitating team development workshops.  Sharing his knowledge and experience as a conference speaker and publishing articles to help others succeed.

Outside work he loves being with his family, walking his rescue dog, Zippo, photography, concerts, music, travel, good food and Plymouth Argyle.  The song that sums up his life is “Don’t you forget about me” by Simple Minds and his favourite quotation is one he penned himself, “I dream, I wish, I hope will not happen unless you take action.”

His claim to fame is that he was the first person from Plymouth to complete the Edgewalk at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto and his unusual fact is that he has a rather large tattoo of the crest of Plymouth Argyle.

Which of the 16 Team DyNAmics Elements does your learning help?: PURPOSE

Ngagementworks Team DyNAmics Strategic ActionHow It Will Help Others?: This activity develops a common, agreed understanding of why your team exists, what this enables and the benefits.  Having clarity of Purpose is the foundation upon which great teams are built.

How long will it take?: Approximately 1hr

What resources are needed?: Pens, paper & flipchart plus pens

What to do:

Each team member is given a pen and piece of paper and asked to write down why they think the team exists.

After everyone has completed this, they read out what they have written.

You will hopefully find some commonality and probably a lot of difference.

Split the team into groups of 4 and give each a flipchart and pen. Using what they’ve heard and written, get each group to discuss and develop a Team Purpose Statement along these lines.

The XYZ Team exists to do….

which enables…

and results in…

Here is an example using my company:

Ngagementworks exists to deliver learning and development solutions that engage individuals and motivates teams, helping them to transform and achieve even greater success. This results in increased engagement and more effective teamwork and has a positive impact at individual, team and organisation level.

Share all the flipcharts and then take the best elements of each and refine it until you have one agreed Team Purpose.

Sense check it with someone outside of your team who doesn’t know what you do, to see if they understand it.

It should be short, use no jargon, comprise of no more than three sentences and you should be able to tell someone within a couple of minutes.

Wishing you continued happiness and success in both work and life.

Yours behaviourally, Nick
