Welcome to High5 Friday, a brief look back at this week and things, people or experiences, that caught my eye and made me feel upbeat and want to share with you. There is so much negativity in the world, I thought this might resonate with others and who knows, you may be one of the people I mention in a future edition.
Wow Wow Wow
I’m sure you’ll agree that joining a new team can be a daunting experience, no matter what age you are or how many teams you have been part of. Well, this week, I joined a new team. On Tuesday, I was honoured and privileged to be one of the judges of the 2017 UK WOW Awards.
Derek Williams, founder of the WOW! Awards and his team had done a great job beforehand on briefing me on what was expected of me as a judge and on arrival at the central London hotel, I was told who the other judges would be for the two categories that I already knew I’d be helping to judge. I was then introduced to Charlie Williams, CEO of CXCO. Charlie had previously been a judge and due to his experience had been asked to chair our group, making sure that we kept to time and understood what was required of us.
Then I met the 4 other judges.
Jane Hirst who runs The People Specialist.
Stephen Spencer, Chief Orchestrator at Stephen Spencer Associates.
Geoff and Gita Langston, who run GL connects.
All of them had been judges previously, so knew what to do. As soon as I entered the room, which would be our home for the next 9 hours, they made me feel welcome and shared their knowledge and experience openly on what to expect and what to do, with Charlie providing the framework on what documents needed to be completed.
All of them were brilliant at putting me at ease and allaying my initial nerves, giving me hints and tips on what to expect and what to do. I truly felt apart of the team in a short space of time, so a big thanks to all of them. My experience got me thinking about people who join your team. What do you or your team do to welcome new them into your team and put them at ease? Do you ask your new team members if what you do works? If not, it may be worthwhile asking them to make sure it works for them and helps them integrate into your team as quickly as possible.
So, what about the day itself? Well it was a truly emotional, inspirational and uplifting experience of how individuals, teams and organisations go that extra mile to WOW their customers in the services they provide. If your organisation wants to raise the bar in the service and experience you deliver to your customers and recognise and appreciate those staff and teams that do, I would highly recommend checking out the WOW! Awards.
So who were the winners you may be thinking? Well on pain of death, my lips are firmly sealed, so you will have to wait and see, when they are revealed at the Gala Awards Ceremony on Monday 6th November at the Radisson Blu Portman Hotel, London.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed this week’s High Five and that you have a great end to the week and weekend.
Wishing you continued success and happiness in both work and life.
Yours behaviourally, Nick
